Obituary

Dee H. Talbot of Bountiful, Utah peacefully passed away at his home on January 30, 2026 with his family by his side.

Born in Panguitch, Utah on November 8, 1947, he was the fifth of six children. The son of Russell Hatch and Memphis Sudweeks Talbot. At the age of 13, he was the first and the youngest in the North Ward in Panguitch to become an Eagle Scout. He lived in Panguitch through his sophomore year of high school and was one of the star players on his basketball team.

With a reassignment of his father's work, the family moved to Coalville where he attended North Summit High School. He loved playing basketball and was one of the stars on their basketball team during his junior and senior years. He earned a scholarship to play for Snow College and attended school there for one year prior to his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve in the Andes South Mission in La Paz, Bolivia, being one of the first missionaries there.

His basketball career did not end during his mission. Dee's Mission President formed a basketball team that played against college and professional teams around the mission. They also had the singing group of missionaries, Los Hermanos Mormones, who would perform during halftime. They would meet with those attending the games and pass out Books of Mormon to those whom they met. It turned out to be a wonderful way to find investigators.

Dee was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather. The most important day of his life was when he married his sweetheart, Jan Stephenson, on March 13, 1992. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 10, 1993. They met on her birthday while filling their mugs with Diet Coke at the Maverik in Bountiful. Since that time they have spent 36 years together enjoying their friendship and partnership with love and happiness, and some tragedies along the way.

Dee was a man of faith and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had an unwavering testimony of the restored Gospel and hisSavior,

Jesus Christ. He loved studying The Old Testament. He was called to serve in many capacities where he could share his testimony and teach gospel principles.

Dee will be remembered for his dedication to learning and as a lifetime scholar. Dee graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Economics and a degree of Master of Public Administration. He had a passion for studying Shakespeare and the authorship question, and he received a Course Certificate for the "Introduction to Who Wrote Shakespeare" from the University of London. There are certain family members who won't miss his lively discussions on that subject!

He loved to read. Some of his favorite subjects included the work of the 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward Devere, whom he passionately believed was the author of the Works of Shakespeare. He also loved reading about the Civil War, American and Elizabethan histories, biographies of the Presidents of the United States, John Woodin and many other topics. He accumulated an extensive library and donated several books to the Davis County Library.

Dee spent over 30 years officiating basketball and football. That career started when his high school coach asked him to officiate junior high school games. He refereed little league games, high school and college football and basketball games, and Utah Jazz Rocky Mountain Reviews. Dee officiated games when John Stockton, Karl Malone, Mark Eaton, and Thurl Bailey played their first games as members of the Utah Jazz. He retired from officiating when he returned to the UofU to pursue his master's degree.

Dee worked in the banking industry for over twenty years then worked for the State of Utah State Tax Commission for 27 years. He ended his career of nearly 25 years as the Director of Taxpayer Services where he was responsible for a staff of 165 employees and the day-to-day operations and services of the division. He accommodated and enjoyed communicating with taxpayers in Spanish when that assistance was needed.

He was an avid photographer and shared his photographic images with his family and many friends. He was a hands-on woodworker and loved working in his shop.

He made pieces of furniture and did repairs and rebuilds. His passion was carving and painting ducks and shore birds. One looked so real that his yellow "Labradorable", Jack, tried retrieving it.

Dee was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Grant Russell, Darlene Orton, Sheldon H (sister-in-law Karen) Ula John, and daughter Jenifer Michaella. He is survived by his wife, Jan, who was by his side constantly, his sister Virginia (Val) Hanney, and sister-in-law Vivian Talbot who spent countless hours visiting with him and caring for him. He is also survived by his beloved children Amy, Allison, Sarah (Brian), John (Jennifer), and David; brother and sister-in law Steve and Sally Stephenson; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and one more on the way.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28 at 11 a.m. at the Bountiful 14th Ward, 1500 South 600 East in Bountiful. A Zoom link will be provided for those who cannot attend the service.

The family is grateful to Jamie and Sarah from Cascade Spring, their friend Teresa. and to Joseph for the care they gave Dee at his home. They are also grateful to family, neighbors, and friends for their outpouring of love and prayers they shared the last several months. There will be a family gathering at a later date when he is placed beside Jenifer at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Enos 1:27

And I soon go to the place of my rest, which is with my Redeemer; for I know that in him I shall rest. And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me: Come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father. Amen.
